Philosophy of Teaching
In my educational journey, I have been fortunate enough to learn from many passionate and talented educators. These teachers helped me to become a life-long learner and achieve my goal of becoming a teacher. Each day I spend in the classroom is a gift and challenge that I happily accept.
I believe every student deserves an education that is tailored to his or her individual needs and addresses the whole child. Academics are a major component of the educational experience, but I believe we also must help our students to build their social and emotional intelligences. My goal as a facilitator of learning is to create a learn space that is safe, comfortable yet challenging, and engaging for all learning styles. I hope to provide my students with experiences that challenge them to think critically and creatively, take risks in their learning, and become the best students that they can be. I know that in order to do this successfully, I must know what excites, puzzles, challenges, and interests each of my students. I want my students to be thinkers, dreamers, scientists, readers, mathematicians, but above all, owners of their own learning. My job is to guide students in their discovery of knowledge.
I feel that if we want students to truly learn concepts, they must be challenged, engaged, and personally connected to the learning. I believe students’ thinking is invaluable knowledge to a teacher and should be made visible everyday. I aspire to be great, not for my own personal gain as an educator, but because my students deserve greatness.
Above all, I want my students to feel that they are known and loved. I hope that I can make my students’ world a better place; my life was changed for the better because of my teachers and I want to do the same for my students. Ideally, all of my students will leave my classroom more capable, more self-aware, and their life would be better because of me. Even if this is the case for only one of my students, it will all have been worthwhile. I am grateful everyday to be a teacher and am excited about all of the learning that is ahead, both my own and my students’.
